In business since 1928

As industrial society became ever more dependent on stable oil supplies, the demand for tanker vessels increased. Aware of a new business opportunity, A.P. Møller established Maersk Tankers, with the company taking delivery of its first five tankers in 1928.

For many years, transporting crude oil in ever-larger vessels was our main service. The first product tankers were delivered in 1965 and transport of gas began in 1972. At the same time, larger supertankers were ordered; the largest, a series of Ultra Large Crude Carriers (ULCC) with a capacity of nearly 340.000 tonnes, were delivered from Odense Steel Shipyard from 1975-1977.

Maersk Tankers has been a leader in safety at sea, which was demonstrated by the introduction of the world’s first double-hulled supertanker in 1993.

The fleet of VLCCs was divested in 2014 and the last Liquefied Petroleum Gas carrier was sold in 2013, as Maersk Tankers focused its business on product tankers.
